Catholic Charities of Orange County Hosts a Free Virtual Citizenship Workshop

On Saturday March 27, Catholic Charities of Orange County’s Immigration and Citizenship Services held a free virtual citizenship workshop. CCOC team members Demis Camacho Esq. and Jesus Pompa led the workshop, and students from the Western State College of Law volunteered to assist. Through this partnership, the students had the opportunity to work with real clients with their N400 Citizenship Applications and get hands-on experience in their field.
The ten law student volunteers are currently enrolled in a “Spanish in Law” class and were from various backgrounds and language capacities. The citizenship workshop was the perfect opportunity to test their language skills in a professional environment, since the event was held primarily in Spanish. Catholic Charities selected ten clients for the workshop and paired each client with a law student based on their language capabilities.
Before the event, students went through a 90-minute training session where Catholic Charities of Orange County’s Immigration and Citizenship Services team went over a sample N400 application, basic requirements for citizenship, and how to answer certain questions and solve common issues. This training prepared the volunteers for the workshop, where the students/clients were separated into breakout rooms, and Camacho and Pompa helped advise/provide guidance.
After the workshop, the clients sent their completed N400 applications to Catholic Charities, and staff members scheduled follow-up appointments with them. CCOC filed the paperwork with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). If no underlying issues are found with the application, an interview with USCIS is scheduled with the applicant, including a Civics and English test. If the client passes the tests, the client is scheduled for an oath of allegiance and becomes a citizen.
Catholic Charities of Orange County provides free citizenship application services. CCOC is a Department of Justice (D.O.J.) recognized agency with D.O.J. accredited staff that assists the community with immigration and citizenship services. Caridades Católicas del Condado de Orange organizan un Taller Virtual Gratuito de Ciudadanía

El sábado 27 de marzo, el departamento de inmigración y ciudadanía de Caridades Católicas del condado de Orange (CCOC) celebró un taller virtual gratuito sobre ciudadanía. Demis Camacho Esq. y Jesús Pompa del equipo de Caridades Católicas dirigieron el taller en colaboración con los estudiantes de la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad Western State. A través de esta colaboración, los estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de ayudar a clientes con sus solicitudes de ciudadanía N400 y obtener experiencia práctica en su campo de estudio.
Los diez estudiantes de derecho que ayudaron en capacidad de voluntarios están actualmente matriculados en una clase de “Español en Derecho” y eran de diferentes orígenes y capacidades lingüísticas. El taller de ciudadanía fue la oportunidad perfecta para probar sus habilidades lingüísticas en un entorno profesional, ya que el evento se llevó a cabo principalmente en Español. Caridades Católicas seleccionó a diez clientes para el taller y emparejó a cada cliente con un estudiante de derecho basado en sus capacidades lingüísticas.
Antes del evento, los estudiantes participaron en un entrenamiento de 90 minutos donde el equipo del Departamento de Inmigración y Ciudadanía de Caridades Católicas del condado de Orange repasó una muestra de la solicitud N400, los requisitos básicos para la ciudadanía, y cómo responder a ciertas preguntas y resolver problemas comunes. Esta capacitación preparó a los voluntarios para el taller, donde los estudiantes/clientes fueron separados en “breakout rooms.” Camacho y Pompa ayudaron a asesorar/proporcionar la orientación.
Después del taller, los clientes enviaron sus solicitudes N400 una vez completas a Caridades Católicas, y los miembros del personal programaron citas de seguimiento con ellos. CCOC presentó el papeleo con U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Si no se encuentran problemas subyacentes con la solicitud, una entrevista con el USCIS es programada con el solicitante, incluyendo una prueba Cívica e Inglés. Si el cliente pasa las pruebas, es entonces programado para un juramento de lealtad en donde al finalizar se convierte en un ciudadano americano.
